What are the alternatives to solar panels?
The scientific community is searching for ways to generate unlimited energy, and now researchers have found a method to utilize artificial photosynthesis, in which plants generate energy for themselves. According to media reports, the procedure for artificial photosynthesis has been discovered in new research, in which scientists have successfully replicated the natural process of photosynthesis to produce methane.
To produce an abundant source of fuel from this energy, only water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight are needed. Researchers outlined their new findings in a paper published in ACS Engineering. They explained that if the measurement is taken, this artificial photosynthesis using solar panels could be an endless and clean energy alternative, which many researchers have been striving to discover over decades.
The team of researchers, led by a scientist and Kazunari Domen, successfully created a system that takes things one step further by using solar energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen gas and then closely mimicking the system used by plants. In other words, carbon dioxide is absorbed, and the energy obtained from the sun is stored in methane.
Experts further mentioned that this is a system very similar to solar panels but with a significant difference. Instead of using solar energy and storing it, we've used the same system as photosynthesis in plants to generate energy. However, increasing the mentioned system to meet the demands of a city is more challenging. The team discussed the obstacles and potential solutions in their published study.
