Research shows that human activities have altered the Earth's rotation
A new study has revealed that humans have changed the rotation of the Earth by extracting water from the Earth on a large scale between 1993 and 2010. The study, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, found that the alarming amount of water extracted from the Earth has caused the Earth to tilt eastward by about 80 centimeters during this time.
Previous studies have suggested that the movement of water is causing the Earth to rotate slightly differently. In the latest study, scientists estimate that humans have extracted 2,150 gigatons of water from the Earth's interior between 1993 and 2010, which is equivalent to a modest 6 millimeters of sea level rise during this period. Although the ability of water to affect the Earth's rotation was first discovered in 2016, the role of groundwater in rotational changes has remained unclear. The new study modeled the observed changes in the Earth's rotational pole shift and water movement.
The results showed that the location from which the Earth's water was drawn was related to how much the polar position could change. The researchers said that the most water from the Earth during the period was located in mid-latitude areas, both in western North America and northwestern India.
