The
Theme for 2015: Inclusion matters: access and empowerment of people of all
abilities.
The
annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was declared in
1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. The celebration
of the Day purposes to promote an appreciative of disability issues and
mobilize support for the dignity, rights, as well as good fortune of persons
with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of improvements to be
derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in all characteristics
of political, social, economic, as well as cultural life.
Subsequently,
in 2009, the Department of Economic and Social Affairs organizes a film
festival as a part of the events at UN Headquarters to commemorate the Day. The
United Nations Enable Film Festival (UNEFF) contains short disability-related
films selected based on their content and message that can help to educate and raise
awareness of disability problems and further promote the complete and effective
participation of disabled people in society.
Since
2015, the Department of Economic and Social Affairs organizes a Photo
Exhibition. The UN Enable Photo Exhibition will work to assist alter
misperceptions to counter stigma and stereotyping about special persons. It
will also promote a better understanding of disability matters and contemporary
persons with disabilities as individuals that are a part of our human assortment.
