Surah Al-Infitar (The Cleaving), Chapter 82 of the Quran

Surah Al-Infitar describes the events of the Day of Judgment with vivid imagery. It begins by depicting cosmic upheavals: the sky is cleft asunder, stars falling, seas boiling over, and graves are being overturned. These dramatic changes signify the end of the world and the resurrection of the dead.

The Surah emphasizes that every soul will be aware of what it has sent forth and left behind on this day. It reminds people of the divine record-keeping by the ever-watchful angels, who document all actions. The Surah cautions against deceiving oneself about the Day of Judgment and the compensation it entails.

It warns those who deny the Day of Judgment, highlighting their ignorance of the consequences of their actions. Conversely, it reassures the righteous, who will be in a state of bliss due to their deeds.

In essence, Surah Al-Infitar is a stark reminder of the inevitable Day of Judgment, encouraging self-reflection and righteous behavior in preparation for the afterlife. 

Surah Al-Infitar and Surah At-Takwir are closely related, to the extent that their themes are identical, and the subject matter of each complements the other. In the opening verses of both Surahs, the conditions of the Day of Judgment are depicted.

In Surah At-Takwir, these conditions are detailed across thirteen verses, whereas in Surah Al-Infitar, the same theme is condensed into just four verses. Following this theme, Surah At-Takwir presents the significant statement: "[(Then) every person will know what he has brought (of good and evil)]" (81:14).

Similarly, Surah Al-Infitar includes the verse: "[(Then) a person will know what he has sent forward and (what he has) left behind (of good or bad deeds)]" (82:5). Up to this point, the content of both Surahs is similar.

After this, Surah At-Takwir refers to the truth of the Quran and poses a poignant question to the audience: "Then where are you going?" (81:26). This question challenges people who neither consider the life of Allah's Messenger nor make an effort to recognize the truth, asking them where they are headed.

However, it does not clarify the outcome once the Day of Judgment occurs and each person is informed of their deeds in detail. This topic is illuminated in Surah Al-Infitar, explaining that if you choose one path, you will reach a certain destination, and if you choose another way, you will face a different consequence.

The Prophet (PBUH) said, "Angels keep on descending from and ascending to the Heaven in turn, some at night and some by daytime, and all of them assemble together at the time of the Fajr and `Asr prayers.

Then those who have stayed with you overnight, ascent unto Allah Who asks them, and He knows the answer better than they, "How have you left My slaves?" They reply, "We have left them praying as we found them praying."

If any of you says "Ameen (O Allah Accept it)" (during the Prayer at the end of the recitation of Surat-al-Fatiha), and the angels in Heaven say the same, and the two sayings coincide, all his past sins will be forgiven."

Narrated By Ibn ‘Abbas: The Prophet narrated about his Lord I’m and said, “Allah ordered (the appointed angels over you) that the good and the bad deeds be written, and He then showed (the way) how (to write).

If somebody intends to do a good deed and he does not do it, then Allah will write for him a full good deed (in his account with Him); and if he intends to do a good deed and actually did it, then Allah will write for him (in his account) with Him (its reward equal) from ten to seven hundred times to many more times: and if somebody intended to do a bad deed and he does not do it, then Allah will write a full good deed (in his account) with Him, and if he intended to do it (a bad deed) and actually did it, then Allah will write one bad deed (in his account).”
