Summary of Quran Chapter 83 Surah Al-Mutaffifin Those Who Deal in Fraud

Surah Al-Mutaffifin (Chapter 83 of the Quran) is a Makkan surah consisting of 36 verses. It addresses the issue of fraud and cheating in commercial transactions, emphasizing the moral and ethical principles that should govern such dealings.

The surah condemns those who give less than what is due when they measure or weigh for others but expect to receive full measure when they are on the receiving end. This hypocritical behavior is strongly criticized.

The surah begins by warning of a severe punishment for those who commit such fraud. It highlights the existence of a Day of Judgment when all actions will be accounted for. The righteous will be rewarded and the sinners will face severe consequences.

The surah describes the fate of the wicked, who will be in a state of ignominy and regret in the afterlife, contrasted with the blissful rewards awaiting the righteous in Paradise.

It also touches on the arrogance and denial of the disbelievers, who mock the believers and dismiss the warnings of the Hereafter.

However, it assures that the record of the righteous is kept in Illiyyin (a high place in heaven), while the record of the wicked is in Sijjin (a register of the damned).

Ultimately, Surah Al-Mutaffifin serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty and integrity in all dealings and the ultimate accountability before Allah Almighty (God). 

Hadith Surah Al-Mutaffifin

Hadith 1:

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, when the servant commits a sin, a black mark appears upon his heart. If he abandons the sin, seeks forgiveness, and repents, then his heart will be polished. If he returns to the sin, the blackness will be increased until it overcomes his heart. It is the covering that Allah has mentioned: No, rather a covering is over their hearts from what they have earned.” (83:14).

Hadith 2:

Abu Umamah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Prayer followed by another prayer, without any vain talk in between, is written in the heavenly record.” (83:18)
