New Malware 'Playful Ghost' Enables Remote Attacks and Extensive Data Collection

Users using VPNs should be aware and cautious

Cybersecurity researchers have identified a new type of malware that can open files, record audio, and screen activity, and connect to devices in remote locations, allowing cyber attackers to launch further attacks. This malware, called Playful Ghost, is known for spreading Trojan-infected VPN software through phishing (fraud-based) and SEO techniques.

The Playful Ghost virus can collect large-scale data from users. The malware can trap users in four ways: running registry keys, scheduled tasks, Windows startup folders, and Windows services. The malware can record data from strokes, screenshots, audio, installed security apps, clipboard content, system metadata, QQ account information, and installed security products.

It can execute files, erase Windows event logs, delete clipboard data, drop additional payloads, and damage cache, web browser profiles, messaging app storage, and profiles.
