In Surah At-Tin, important truths about the psychological and philosophical aspects of human life are discussed. Since this chapter primarily deals with human creation, understanding it requires considering the verse from Surah Ash-Shams:
"Then He inspired it [the soul] with its wickedness and its righteousness." (Quran 91:8)
In this verse, Allah has made it clear that the human soul has been endowed with an innate understanding of good and evil. Now, keeping this reality in mind, imagine a person whose moral conscience is fully active and awakened. When such a person observes a corrupt society (unfortunately, our society today presents a perfect picture of collective moral decay), they may begin to think that perhaps humans are inherently lowly and impure creatures, and that goodness hardly exists within them.
Due to this perspective, nearly all modern psychologists agree on the point that human beings are primarily driven only by animalistic instincts, such as the urges of hunger, lust, and the desire to dominate, without any higher moral sense or spiritual inclination. This realization can be deeply disheartening for a sensitive person.
However, in contrast, this Surah At-Tin enlightens us with the truth that humans are not merely creatures of evil and sin. Instead, they possess the potential to reach great heights of excellence and moral elevation.
